Physical Description | Ammonium sulfide aqueous solution is a colorless to yellow liquid, with an odor of rotten eggs or ammonia. Can slowly react with water to generate flammable and toxic hydrogen sulfide gas. This reaction is much faster with acid. It may be irritating to skin, eyes and mucous membranes and may cause illness from skin absorption. It may burn and/or emit toxic fumes if heated to high temperatures.

Toxicity

Toxicity
5
Ecotoxicity Values
TLm Mosquito fish 248 ppm/48 hr fresh water. /Conditions of bioassay not specified/
Probable Routes of Human Exposure
NIOSH (NOES Survey 1981-1983) has statistically estimated that 4,271 workers (1,482 of these were female) were potentially exposed to diammonium sulfide in the US(1). Occupational exposure to diammonium sulfide may occur through inhalation and dermal contact with this compound at workplaces where diammonium sulfide is produced or used. Use data indicate that the general population may be exposed to diammonium sulfide via ingestion of food and dermal contact with consumer products containing diammonium sulfide(SRC).
Adverse Effects
Toxic Pneumonitis - Inflammation of the lungs induced by inhalation of metal fumes or toxic gases and vapors.
Human Toxicity Excerpts
/OTHER TOXICITY INFORMATION/ If free gastric acidity is high, the ingestion of these salts may result in their decomp to hydrogen sulfide in stomach with subsequent systemic poisoning. /Alkaline sulfide salts/
Non-Human Toxicity Excerpts
/LABORATORY ANIMALS: Acute Exposure/ In addition to increased ventilation, small parenteral doses of sulfide in lab animals produce fleeting rise followed by profound (perhaps irreversible) fall in blood pressure. Death ... is invariably result of central resp paralysis. /Hydrogen sulfide/
