Benzenesulfonyl chloride is prepared by reaction of benzene and chlorosulfonic acid or from the sodium salt of benzenesulfonic acid and PCl5 or POCl3. It reacts with Grignard reagent from N-unsubstituted indoles to form oxindoles or substituted indoles.
